Insomnia might seem like a silly problem in the beginning until the condition hits you, continuously, many nights in a row. The situation might be so adverse that, you might drastically lose weight and feel tired always. The consequences of insomnia are severe affecting all parts of a person’s life.

There are many medicines that induce sleep that act on the receptors and slow down the nervous system, inducing sleep. But the side effects of taking these medicines are many including diarrhea, dizziness, constipation, change in appetite, etc.

With the arrival of CBD, which can treat insomnia without any side effects, these medicines face tough competition in the market.

What Is CBD? Is CBD Legal?

Cannabidiol, which is commonly called CBD, is a phytocannabinoid extracted from hemp plant. There is a reason why only the hemp plant, which is renowned for belonging to the marijuana species, is used to extract CBD. It contains very less amount of THC- the chemical that gets a person high- when compared to other plants from the same species because of which it was made legal in 2018 in the US. Moreover, it is a reservoir of CBD, making it a needed medicinal plant.

What Does CBD Do To Sleep?

Before we get into how CBD affects sleep, let’s look at how what causes insomnia. According to the Mayo clinic, insomnia is caused by-

  • Anxiety, post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and depression
  • Some medicines change the sleep-wake pattern
  • Physical conditions like pain
  • Caffeine, when consumed before sleeping
  • Environmental factors like loud noise

How Does CBD Improve Sleep

Even though very few studies have been done on CBD, its ability to reduce pain and anxiety was said to help treat insomnia. Research conducted on the effect of CBD on sleep and anxiety proved our doubts true. The study included 47 people experiencing anxiety and 25 with poor sleep who were given 25 milligrams of CBD each for a month. The results were encouraging- 79.2% of them reported reduced anxiety and 66.7% reported better sleep.

Studies also proved that CBD helps soothe the pain. In 2018, Frontiers in Pharmacology came forth with evidence proving that chronic pain can be reduced by CBD. Using CBD oil for pain relief is becoming common now.

Similarly, a research conducted on four people suffering from Parkinson’s showed that CBD improved the symptoms of REM sleep behavior disorder (RBD) which causes nightmares and poor sleep. A 2017 review also reaffirmed that CBD can treat RBD and it could be possibly used to cure daytime sleepiness.
